Allen Named in England 7s Squad

Maisy Allen to represent England 7s at Toulouse tournament.

England Women's Sevens head coach James Rodwell is set to hand Exeter University's Maisy Allen her England Sevens debuts at this weekend's for the Toulouse Tournament at the Stade-Ernest Wallon.

Allen recently captained England U20s in their series against Scotland Futures and France U20s and has impressed for Susie Appleby's Exeter Chiefs side this season, becoming a key component in the group that secured the Allianz Cup earlier this season.

Abbie Brown captains the group, while Worcester Warriors’ Jade Shekells, and DMP Durham Sharks’ Lauren Torley return after earning their first caps in Langford last month.

Drawn in Pool C, England take on Ireland, France and Brazil.

For Allen, it is an opportunity that she is relishing:

"I'm so excited for this opportunity to get to play on the World Series. It's something I wouldn't have ever imagined doing four months ago but I can't wait to put into practice everything we've worked on as a team. I'm excited to play alongside the rest of the team. It's so different to 15s but I'm ready for the challenge," she explained.

Speaking on the selection for the tournament, Rodwell was excited by the opportunity ahead for his side.

“After a very tight turnaround from Langford where a number of players went back to play for their clubs in the Allianz Premier 15s it’s another opportunity for the group to pull on an England shirt in Toulouse for the final tournament of the season.

The head coach was also quick to highlight how pleased he had been with Allen's development, ahead of her debut for the side.

“Maisy Allen has really impressed since coming in in January and has been brilliant in camp. It’s great she has the opportunity to pull on an England shirt and we’re excited to see what she can do.

“Unfortunately we lost Grace Crompton over the weekend so Georgina Tasker replaces her within the squad who featured in the first two legs of this calendar year in Spain. We’re excited to see her get back in the shirt.

After handing fellow EURFC player Merryn Doidge her 7s debut last time out in Langford, Rodwell sees this as a crucial period in developing his squad ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

“This tournament is vital for our preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It’s all about learning and growing on and off the field for this young group. It’s about building for the future.”
