Alumni Dom Thorne to Take on Atlantic Rowing Challenge

Harry Scott-Munro2 Sep 2021 - 10:20

Former EURFC club man and current Exeter Chiefs S&C coach to row the Atlantic to raise funds for mental health charities

Former EURFC clubmen and now Head of Exeter Chiefs Women’s Strength and Conditioning Dom Thorne, is taking on the Atlantic for charity this December.

Teaming up with Exeter City FC’s Lead Academy Sports Scientist James Bevan and Exeter City Academy Coaching Mentor and former Marine Mickey Turner, the three are aiming to row the Atlantic in a new world record time of less than 35 days, in order to raise money for several charities, focusing on mental health, including the ‘RMA Royal Marines Charity,’ ‘The Firefighters Charity,’ ‘Not Forgotten Association,’ and ‘Go Again Mental Health Consultancy.’

Dom has been an integral part of EURFC for several years, both as a player, committee member and now, as a member of staff, assisting with strength and conditioning for the High-Performance programme.

Rowing aboard the famous Cockleshell Endeavour boat, the team of three will set off from Gran Canaria in early December, rowing unaided across 3987 miles until they reach Barbados.

As a crew of three, Dom, James and Mickey will rotate shifts between them, rowing for two hours and then resting for two for 24 hours a day.

Having secured sponsorship to get the boat in the water, attention has now turned to raising the much-needed funds to support the amazing work that the charities they are rowing for do.

With the boat due to be moored in Topsham, there will be plenty of opportunities to see the lads in action as they train in the build-up to the event, with plans in place to promote the challenge at both Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City.
