EURFC are delighted that another of our BUCS Super Rugby stars will be playing rugby at the highest level, with the news that Joe Elderkin will be joining flyhalf Harry Bazalgette at Cornish Pirates for the 2021/22 Greene King IPA Championship season.
Elderkin was nominated for the BUCS Super Rugby Fans Player of the Year Award in 2020 and made 33 appearances for EURFC in BUCS Super Rugby between 2017 and 2020, amassing 20 points from centre.
His performances were recognised within the university as well, as he was named at inside centre in the EURFC BUCS Super Rugby dream team, voted for by supporters.
He appeared off the bench for the Pirates this season against Hartpury College and will look to kick on next season.
Speaking about the move, Elderkin admitted he has delighted to have an opportunity to get into the thick of things with his new side.
“Growing up in Cornwall and loving watching the Cornish Pirates play from a young age, it is an honour to be able to get the chance to be a squad member. I am very excited to get started and get stuck into pre-season with what is a great group of guys.”
Cornish Pirates’ joint head coach Gavin Cattle was equally delighted to secure Elderkin for next season.
“We have been aware of the promise that Joe has shown. An intelligent and well-balanced personality he trained with us in the past and has been on trial voluntarily during the Covid period,” he explained.
“His attitude and commitment have been excellent, and now earning a contract is a just reward for his efforts. Also, of course, it gives him an opportunity to learn from accomplished players and compete for a place in the team.”
As well as his performances for EURFC, Elderkin has represented Exeter Chiefs Academy, as well as featuring for the Chiefs in the Singha 7s, and for the Exeter Braves team. He has also played for Redruth, Plymouth Albion, and for Cornwall.
All at EURFC are delighted to see Joe make the step up to join the Pirates and hope to see his spell at the Pirates turn out to be a highly successful one.
