A late penalty from Charlie Titcombe secured a narrow 16-15 victory for England Students over France Universities at Kingston Park.
This was just the second time that the side have secured victory over their French counterparts and, whilst a lot of the credit has to go to Titcombe for nailing the long-range penalty, EURFC prop Fin Richardson played a huge role in the pivotal moment of the game.
A knock-on in midfield from England Students looked to have taken the opportunity away from them, only for a huge drive against the head at scrum time from the English pack to set up the opportunity for Titcombe.
All three Exeter players arrived into the action on the 50 minute mark, as England Students staged a second half fightback to secure victory.
The French side contained a number of players with experience in the ProD2 league and they made the fastest start, probing for territory and space.
Titcombe though, opened the scoring with an early penalty, but the English lead was short-lived, as a stray pass as they looked to play out from their own 22, was picked off by Gabin Lorre, the fullback diving over in the corner for his side.
Antoine Aucagne slotted the conversion, before adding a penalty from just inside the England half, to see the French take a 7-point lead from a physical opening forty minutes.
The second half though, saw England come out with a renewed intensity, with a try from Leeds Beckett No. 8 Nick Brown levelling the game, as he crashed over after picking the ball from the base of the ruck and burst free. After some afters from the French side, Titcombe converted to leave the match level at 10-apiece.
The French reply though was pretty much instant, as Samuel Hostalrich scored after continued pressure from the French pack. The conversion though slid wide, leaving England knowing that any score would secure victory.
EURFC's contingent made a big impression in the second half, as they added renewed zip and physicality to the English attack.
It all came down to a scrum penalty against the head, as the English pack turned the screw on France, to secure a penalty against the head, allowing Titcombe to slot the ball over from the halfway line and secure a narrow, but significant victory for England Students, to crown a perfect season for the EURFC contingent.
