EURFC Past and Present Help Exeter Chiefs Women to First Premier 15s Final

Harry Scott-Munro23 May 2022 - 16:08

Exeter Chiefs defeat Bristol Bears 28-24 to seal place in final.

It was an historic occasion on Sunday afternoon at Sandy Park, as Exeter Chiefs Women secured their place in the Allianz Premier 15s final for the first time in their history.

In front of a vocal crowd in excess of 2500, the Chiefs raced into a 21-0 lead, before Bristol hit back to take a 3-point lead with just four minutes to go.

The Chiefs refused to lie down though and fought back thanks to a Jennine Detiveaux try that was assisted by current student Flo Robinson.

There was still time for the Bears to launch one last assault in the Exeter 22, but the Chiefs pack held firm to seal a monumental victory.

Current students Robinson and Merryn Doidge played a crucial role for the Chiefs, with Robinson setting up the crucial match-winning score for Detiveaux.

Doidge meanwhile, was resolute under the high ball, whilst continuing to pose a threat in broken field with ball in hand.

Fellow current student Nancy McGillivray was an unused substitute on the bench, but the young centre has continued to be a big presence for the Chiefs this season, shoring up their midfield when an injury crisis hit mid-season.

There were also a host of former club members on the field as well, with former player and current EURFC Women's Head Coach Poppy Leitch leading from the front in the backrow and former student Ebony Jefferies making a nuisance of herself at the breakdown, routinely snuffing out wave after wave of Bristol Bears attack.

Club alumni Clara Nielson was also named amongst the substitutes, having played a big part throughout the season for the team in both league and cup.

On the Bears side, alumni Amber Reed was pivotal in their fightback, slotting two conversions and keeping things ticking in attack, but it would ultimately not quite prove enough to haul her side over the finish line.

EURFC have played a key role for Exeter Chiefs Women this season, with a large contingent of current and former players playing key roles in the Allianz Cup triumph and now, this historic run to the league final.

Now, a date with destiny at Sixways awaits.
