There is plenty of Exeter Uni representation in England U20s World Championship squad

With the season finished most players get plenty of time off to recover and recharge back home, but for some it means internationals.

The World Rugby U20s Championship kicked off this past week in Cape Town, South Africa, with England tipped as one of the favouries. Part of the squad are 4 members of 2024’s league title winning squad: hooker Louie Gulley, second-row Joe Bailey, flanker Kane James and fly-half Ben Coen.

All have put very impressive performances in this season in green and white, with U20s head coach Mark Maplecroft making note and keeping a close eye on BUCS Super Rugby this season.

England’s campaign kicked off on Saturday against Argentina. Bailey started the game, with both James and Coen coming off the bench, both making a serious impact on the game. After a nervy 60 minutes, the 2016 champions took firm control with two late Jack Bracken tries to seal his hat-trick.

Coming into this week, James’ and Coen’s impressive performance has convinced Maplecroft to give them the nod to start against Fiji today. Always a tough side to play against, the England squad will have no complacency heading into it despite Fiji’s heavy loss to South Africa last week.

Their final group game for England will be up against the hosts South Africa. Another former champion of the World Under 20s, the Baby Boks dominated their opening game and will a tough test.

Catch Kane and Ben in action at 3.30pm today
