Nine EURFC Players named in England Students squad

EURFC Media20 Apr 2023 - 14:07

Largest number of call-ups ever to Students side.

A day after winning the greatest BUCS Super Rugby match of all-time to secure back-to-back championship titles, EURFC are delighted to confirm that nine members of the title winning squad have been named in the England Students squad to take on France on 6th May.

The selected players are: Niall Armstrong, Josh Barton, Kofi Barton-Byfield, Max Courtis , Will de Boehmler, Lucas Dorrell, Sam Higginson, Benjy Joseland and Archie Owlett.

All nine players were on the field last night at StoneX, as EURFC secured a pulsating 48-44 extra-time victory over Loughborough to retain the BUCS championship crown.

Barton is the only player of the eight to have previously played for England students, having been called up last season. The fly-half captained the side at StoneX Stadium in the absence of Ollie Leatherbarrow, as he delivered again on the biggest of stages in his final match in Exeter colours.

Barton finishes his university career with 320 points and 15 tries for EURFC.

Scrum-half Niall Armstrong opened the scoring in last night's final and has led from the front this season, with a series of impressive displays that have helped pull his side through in a number of matches.

Kofi Barton-Byfield is another who has impressed this season. The diminutive winger scored one of the greatest solo tries ever seen in a university final at StoneX, to take his tally to 14 for the season. He has an incredible strike rate of 18 tries in 23 matches for Exeter in BUCS Super Rugby.

Max Courtis has been an imposing and physical presence at 12 this season for EURFC, with his workmate and ability to get over the gain line making him a lethal attacking threat for Exeter.

Backrow Will de Boehmler has been a consistent member of the squad all season, but stepped up in the absence of Leatherbarrow, to become an imposing presence at number 8, excelling in the last third of the season and scoring a try at Sandy Park.

He is joined in the squad by fellow back row Lucas Dorrell. The fresher was instrumental in last night's victory, scooping the Player of the Match award after a titanic performance.

Sam Higginson also makes the squad. After starting all three knockout games last season for Exeter, Higginson has developed into a senior player this season in the pack, scoring three tries.

Wing Benjy Joseland is included too, after securing back-to-back titles in his two years at university. With his ability to cover wing and fullback, as well as his ability with ball in hand, he has proven to be an important cog in the Exeter machine.

Finally, prop Archie Owlett is included, having impressed everyone with his scrummaging ability. Having already made 26 appearances for the side in his second year as a student, he is an impressive young prop who is only continuing to develop.

All at EURFC are delighted for the nine players selected and wish them luck against the French Universities side on 6th May.
