It has been a year like no other for EURFC Women this season, with both the 1st and 2nd teams securing promotion.
For the 2s, that result was secured with a superb 36-15 victory over Plymouth on the Rubber Crumb last week. It was the culmination of a superb season that started back in November, with a first league game of the season away against Plymouth.
Plymouth were seen by many as title favourites ahead of the season, but EURFC 2s were certainly in the mix.
Ahead of the match, seven players named in the matchday squad were readying themselves to play their first ever game of rugby. The match was a thriller, that came down to the wire, with a try in the corner from Meg MacColl securing a last minute 20-15 victory for EURFC.
The winning streak continued, as the 2s played four more games on the bounce, against USW, Bristol, Cardiff, and Marjon.
Looking back, the fixture against Marjon, under the lights, was arguably the game where the side fully clicked, with EURFC running in eight tries against an experienced and well-drilled Marjon side.
Post-Christmas, the progression and growth of the 2s squad continued. The first game of Term 2 saw the side face USW away. This was always going to be a tough fixture, but the side put in a huge shift, to secure a close 3-point win, after an impressive try from Sasha Edhouse.
Off of a huge carry from the base of the scrum from Genevieve Shaw, Edhouse managed to finish superbly, to secure a hard-fought 10-7 victory. That result saw the 2s go clear at the top of the league table, with a comfortable gap starting to build to second place.
A victory against Bristol then followed, before the final game of the season saw the side again face Plymouth, in a top of the table clash on the Rubber Crumb.
This match was a real marker of the squad’s development over the course of the season. The game was hugely physical and both teams put in amazing defensive efforts. It was EURFC 2s though that ultimately secured the win and promotion, after scoring six impressive tries. One particular highlight amongst the tries, was a score from Cerys Stratton-Brown, who battled her way over the try line from close quarters, to spark huge celebrations from her side.
In total, 40 players have represented the 2s this year, with 12 of those never having played rugby before coming to university.
It has been a season to remember for EURFC 2s. With 56 tries scored and a total of 268 points in total, this has been a remarkable season for this hugely talented group of players. They have done the club and the sport proud.
Looking ahead to next season, the side will be hoping to transfer this form into the BUCS Women’s Western Tier 1 division, as women’s rugby in Exeter continues to go from strength to strength.
