After a fantastic victory last week over Cardiff Met, EURFC will be determined to back up that performance with another win this week, as they welcome Leeds Beckett to Topsham. With our opponents bottom of the league, there is no doubt they will have a point to prove on Wednesday.

Under the bright lights of the BUCS Super Rugby live stream last week, a tense first half ensued, with the side edging into a 3-0 at the break. However, Exeter broke free of the shackles in the second half going 20-0 up, until a comeback came on. Two tries from the hosts put them within touching distance, but a late Josh Barton penalty was enough to get Exeter over the line. Not even a late consolation try could stop the side from coming home victorious.

A first BUCS win this year is no doubt going to inspire and re-energize this side, as they look to build on that incredible victory last week.

Speaking to starting scrum-half Tom Cairns he certainly agrees that the win is massive for the club and that it will only breed positivity within the green and white ranks.

“Coming away with the points we needed from Cardiff Met was big. The boys have really picked up some confidence after that game." he explained.

In the league table at the moment, there are just 5 points separating the 2nd and 8th places, with Cairns highlighting the fact that “every point counts” as “this league is so tight”. To combat this Exeter are “making sure they put everything out there for every minute, every time."

For many of the squad, this will be a second game of the week, after an Exeter Chiefs friendly scheduled against a Bristol Bears ‘A’ side on Saturday.

The game included 13 former and current EURFC players, and with Cairns being one of them he is proud of the “strong relationship” that has been built between Chiefs and the university. The amount of players really “shows how good the programme is and it’s working so well."

A particular highlight in that match was fullback Dan John who was nominated for Man of the Match and made some sensational runs in the first half especially.

Looking forward to this Wednesday, our opponents Leeds Beckett are currently pointless at the foot of the table and following a heavy loss to Swansea last week they’ll be desperate to get back to winning ways tomorrow.

History is on the hosts side, with Beckett not having won against EURFC since December 2019.

However, as Cairns says, “you can’t underestimate any team in this league, you’ve really got to switch on”

The side are raring to go for this one, and with such a positive result last week Head Coach Rich Hodges has made very few changes for another big game. In the pack there is just one alteration with tighthead prop Archie Rolls replaced by substitute last week Harvey Dunn. Elsewhere, the backrow remains the same, with Ollie Leatherbarrow, Ross Vintcent and Will de Boehmler all packing down.

Similarly, in the forwards, there is one change. After a full 80 minutes at the weekend, Will Becconsall moves to the bench and is replaced by Tom Cairns at scrum half. Kofi Barton-Byfield starts again on the wing and will be looking to capitalise on his impressive 6 tries in 4 BUCS Super Rugby games so far this.

Tomorrow promises to be a fascinating encounter, as both sides look to push on with their so far slowly starts to the season.

Kick-off is at 2 pm at Topsham, and with live Twitter updates throughout the match, it’s impossible to miss.
