Match Preview

EURFC Media27 Aug 2022 - 00:15

A fortnight on from a last-gasp defeat at Topsham, EURFC have revenge on their minds, as they make the trip to Brickfields to take on Plymouth Albion.

A side that has been showing its brilliance in attack in recent weeks, will be determined to show more of a defensive steel this time around, having shipped nine tries against Plymouth and Guernsey at Topsham.

In just one week's time, EURFC will be readying themselves for their first ever National 2 West fixture against Barnstaple and today's outing at Brickfields will serve as the perfect final hit-out ahead of the league season.

With a number of players returning from pre-season campaigns at their respective professional clubs, the squad is only continuing to strengthen and build heading into the new season.

Team News:

There's an element of change again for EURFC, as Tom Harris and Tirion Bowen make their first starts of pre-season at loosehead prop and second-row respectively. In the backline, Harlequins academy player Jake Murray makes his first appearance of the season at scrum-half, with Benjy Joseland named on the wing, having been training with Exeter Chiefs throughout pre-season.

On the bench, Jared Williams, Todd Muil, Josh Thorne and Ben Hammersley come into the side, with Hammersley set to make his first appearance of pre-season, after being involved with Exeter Chiefs throughout pre-season.

Today's Opponents:

National 1 side Plymouth Albion will be eager to complete a pre-season double over EURFC, in their final pre-season outing before their league campaign gets underway.

The 42-36 victory over EURFC at Topsham showed their ability to pull a result back from the brink, with their strength upfront helping them onto the front foot.

A narrow defeat to Redruth last time out, they will be determined to end their pre-season campaign on a winning note.

After a season of struggle last time out, there is fresh optimism this season for the Ocean City side, with a series of astute signings bolstering the ranks ahead of the new campaign.

Founded in 1876 by a group of Dockyard Apprentices, Albion have a rich rugby history. In 1905, they played host to the ‘Originals’ All Blacks side in front of 19,000 spectators.

At the turn of the century, Albion secured a National League record 41 consecutive victories, as they made their way up the league pyramid and into the Championship. (National 1 as it was then called.)

After moving to Brickfields in 2003, the club enjoyed thirteen seasons in the second division, before being relegated in 2015 after a series of financial issues.

Having been rescued by former players David Venables and Bruce Priday, Albion have now stabilised in National 1 over the last few seasons, as they look to rebuild and develop, with a focus on local talent coming through the ranks. After a trying season last time out, they will be aiming to propel themselves up the table this year.

Opposition Players to Watch:

Fin Richardson - It seems odd to highlight a player amongst the replacements. However, in this instance, the attention is warranted. Prop Richardson was an integral part of the EURFC squad that secured the BUCS National Championship title last season and, having now signed a professional contract with Exeter Chiefs, he is set to cut his teeth in an Albion shirt this season.

Herbie Stupple - Abrasive number 8 Stupple scored in the reverse fixture at Topsham, with his all-round play and abrasive presence at the breakdown helping to give Albion significant front-foot ball against Exeter last time out. The number 8 is an integral part of the Albion squad and a leader on the pitch. His energy will be crucial to his side's performance today.

Getting There:

Car: It's approximately an hour's drive from Exeter to Brickfields along the A38, with parking available at the ground.

Admission Fee: A card payment of £5 is required to attend this fixture.
