Heartbreak at Hartpury

In a thrilling encounter at Alpas Arena, Hartpury and Exeter battled fiercely in a match that saw the restart of fixtures, in Round 10 of the Bucs Super Rugby League.

The game kicked off with Exeter taking early control, securing a scrum just meters from the '22 after an interception attempt by Hartpury. A yellow card for Hartpury early in the match handed Exeter a numerical advantage. However, Hartpury's resilience proved pivotal as their pack powered over the try line, securing the first seven points of the game within the first 10 minutes.

Discipline became a key factor as both teams incurred penalties, with a lack of control at the centre of the proceedings. A successful penalty kick extended the lead for the home side, bringing the score to 10-0. Exeter, determined to mount a comeback, capitalized on an offside penalty, allowing Charlie McCaig to add three points to the board.

The turning point for Exeter came when consecutive penalties and disciplined play set the stage for Seb Driscoll's try, tying the score at 10-10. The first half ended on an equal footing, setting the stage for an intense second half.

Returning from the break, both teams displayed ambition and drive. Hartpury's early possession was thwarted by a superb tackle from Jared Williams, turning the ball over. However, Exeter's struggles in the lineout gave Hartpury an opportunity for their second try, extending their lead.

Despite substitutions injecting fresh energy into the match, Hartpury's attack remained relentless. Identifying gaps in the Exeter line, a well-executed cross-kick resulted in another try for the hosts, securing a comfortable lead at 31-10.

Exeter fought valiantly to narrow the gap, with Kian Gentry sprinting over for a try after a quick kick off the scrum. Charlie McCaig's successful conversion brought the final score to 31-17 as the referee blew the whistle.

While a tough loss for Exeter, credit is due to Hartpury for a well-deserved victory. As Exeter reflect on the match, the side looks ahead to their last fixture before Christmas, gearing up to face Nottingham at home next week.
