After last week’s emphatic triumph against a strong Newport (Salop) team, EURFC are back at Topsham to face Luctonians in what is bound to be a close encounter.

Exeter had little to complain about last week as a Josh Throne brace meant the boys amassed 50 points for the first time in Nat 2 this season. Despite the eventual nature of the win, it was hard work. Late in the first half Exeter had a narrow 17-12 lead, and with Newport pushing didn’t seem comfortable. However, an outstanding 30mins in the second half took the game away and EURFC cruised to victory. The only caveat on the performance would be two soft tries at the end of the match, handing our hosts a try bonus point.

Luctonians have had an inconsistent set of results recently, with a win over Stourbridge last week being proceeded by a narrow away defeat to Loughborough. Those results will no doubt inspire this team, as they look to go one step further than they did against the last student team they faced.

Tomorrow’s Opponents

Luctonians were founded in 1948 and will be celebrating their 75th anniversary next year. Based in Herefordshire, the team were promoted to this level of competition during the 2018-2019 season and have remained ever since. Despite being in the Nat 2 for a while, this is their first time in the West conference, having been transferred from the Northern conference for this year.

They managed a mid-table finish last year in a league that also contained both Stourbridge, Bournville, and Loughborough Students. Finishing ahead of both Loughborough and Bournville will give the side hope going into this season, with a solid finish very much on the cards. Highlight of the season will go to the 75-0 home victory over Harrogate, or convincing beating league champions Hull 24-7, on the last day of the season.

Team News

There are three changes in the pack for Exeter. The first is at Hooker with Ed Holroyd starting after his apperence of the bench last week. The next is in the second row where Tirion Bowen is looking to keep his match fitness up following frequent game time off the bench in BUCS Super Rugby. The last is in the back row. With Ben Grubb picking up an injury last week he is unavailable. Therefore Josh Throne moves to No. 8 and Ronan Kelly comes into start on the flank.

For the backs there are no changes, with the only difference being Tribe and Thomas once again swapping with Ed Thomas starting at fullback this time around.

With a couple missing out it means call ups for Ellis Baldry, Rob Gordon and Jago Bailey to bench, all of which are new from last weeks’ victory.

Car: Topsham Sports Ground is located just outside of Topsham itself. Follow the A38 and pick
up signs for the A379 to Topsham.

Parking: Limited parking is available at Topsham Sports Ground, with cars charged per person

Train: From Exeter St. David’s, connect onto any train to Exmouth, leaving the train at
Topsham. The ground is approximately 10 minutes from the station by foot.
