Match Preview

EURFC Media9 Sep 2022 - 16:44

It will be with a heavy heart that we welcome National League Rugby to Topsham tomorrow,
following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. Redruth are our visitors
for what is going to be an emotional day. The King and the Royal Family will be in our thoughts
throughout, with a period of silence before the match and players wearing black armbands.

Last weekend, EURFC opened their National 2 West account with an entertaining 31-23 victory
over Barnstaple. With disruption to the team selection in the build-up to the match, including in
the warm-up, EURFC were delighted to get over the line in a hard-fought contest.

Redruth served notice of their intention to again challenge for the title this season, with an
emphatic victory over Stourbridge and this one is set to be another cracking encounter.

Team News:

After a much-changed side impressed last weekend against Barnstaple, it’s wholesale changes
again, for EURFC this week with 10 changes to the starting XV.

Having lost a significant number of players last weekend to a combination of injuries and Exeter
Chiefs call-ups, Keith Fleming and Rich Hodges will be delighted to have seen the depth of
talent at their disposal.

There are five changes in the pack, with Tom Harris and Ed Holroyd coming into the front row,
whilst Sam Higginson returns from injury in the second row.

In the backrow, Will de Boehmler returns to the side having featured for the Chiefs against
Cornish Pirates, with BUCS Super Rugby captain Ollie Leatherbarrow making his first
appearance of the season at number 8.

In the backs, Tom Cairns comes in at scrum half, with a new-look centre pairing of Max Courtis
and Archie Hill.

There are two more changes on the wing as well, with Ben Hammersley and Benjy Joseland
coming into the side.

On the bench, there could be first competitive appearances of the season for Harvey Dunn,
Todd Muil, Will Becconsall & Kofi Barton-Byfield.

Tomorrow's Opponents:

Last season was one that will be looked back on as a ‘nearly’ season for Redruth, as they
pushed Esher right to the wire in National 2 South, only to be pipped to promotion at the death.
A resolute and clinical side, with plenty of experience in national league rugby, Redruth made a
statement of intent last weekend, as they put forty points past Stourbridge.

Founded in 1875, it was the first club to be formed in West Cornwall. They are one of the most
successful club sides in Cornwall, having won the Cornwall Cup 10 times and the Cornwall
Super Cup 3 times, and are currently the second highest ranked club side behind the Cornish
Pirates.

After a third-place finish in the Covid cancelled 2019-20 season, and a second-place finish last
season, a title win will certainly be the target this time.

Opposition Players to Watch:

Richard Brown - Hooker: It’s a special achievement to reach a century of games for your club,
let alone the 300 mark that Brown achieved last weekend. He’s a key cog in the Redruth pack.

Fraser Honey - Fly Half: A 13-point haul last week against Stourbridge from the fly half, who
will look to ignite his side in attack on Saturday.
